Lab Single Replacement Reactions and Relative Reactivity Purpose of the experiment: Determine the relative reactivity of magnesium, iron, and copper. Background information: A chemical change alters a substance or substances, forming new substances. Collisions between molecules and between ions that produce chemical reactions result in chemical changes. A single-replacement chemical reaction is one in which one substance from a compound is replaced by another substance. 2. The reactivity of a substance depends on its ability to gain or lose electrons. 3. A more active metal tends to lose electrons more readily than a less active metal. 4. See Hypothesis. Teaching the Lab Have students work in File Size: KB.

To help you get even better grades I’ve written a lot of e-books, packed full of loads of excellent questions to help you study. Because the best thing you can do is practice. Is the following reaction a synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, neutralization (acid-base), or combustion reaction? C 10 H 8 + 12O 2 → 10CO 2 + 4H 2 O A/5.

A single displacement reaction occurs when an element reacts with a compound in a chemical reaction. During the reaction, the element replaces the anion or the cation in the compound. Complete and balance the following single replacement reactions. A single-displacement reaction, also known as a single-replacement reaction, is a type of chemical reaction in which an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element within.

A single-replacement reaction replaces one element for another in a compound. The periodic table or an activity series can help predict whether single-replacement reactions occur.

A double-replacement reaction exchanges the cations (or the anions) of two ionic compounds. This subcategory of single-replacement reactions is called a metal replacement reaction because it is a metal that is being replaced (copper).

Hydrogen Replacement Single Replacement Reactions & Relative Reactivity book metals react easily with acids and when they do so, one of the products of the reaction. The purpose of the lab is to observe and rank the relative reactivity of various metals in single replacement reactions.

PROCEDURE Part 1: Metals with Salts 1. These reactions are very often slow to develop, so we want to get them started first, and then return to them later to observe any changes.

Take a depression (spot) plate from your lab Size: 83KB. Hypothesis – Centered on the reactivity of the 4 metals-- Cu, Zn, Mg, and Fe. Hypothesize an order of reactivity from most reactive metal to least reactive.

Materials list – well plate, 4 metals, 4 solutions. Procedure – How will you test each of the metals with each of the solutions.

Data table – create it similar to the well plate. Single Replacement Purpose: To examine the reactions between 3 metals; copper, magnesium and nickel, and 4 solutions; copper (II) sulfate, magnesium chloride, nickel (II) nitrate and hydrochloric acid.

From these results, an activity series showing the relative reactivity of 4 elements will be established. Definition of single replacement (or single displacement) reactions. Predicting and determining the products using the reactivity series. If you're seeing this message, it means we're having trouble loading external resources on our website.

Predicting Single Replacement Reactions. Step by Step rules. Check table J and see if the single element is above the element it will replace based on activity (metals replace metals and nonmetals replace nonmetals). you can see the reaction rates of different metals below.

If Yes, Write the formulas. The reaction between zinc metal and hydrochloric acid to produce zinc chloride and hydrogen gas is an example of a single-displacement reaction: Zn(s) + 2 HCl(aq) → ZnCl 2 (aq) + H 2 (g) Another example is the displacement of iron from an iron(II) oxide solution using coke as a carbon source.

Relative reactivity determines whether an element can replace another element in a single replacement reaction. Scroll down to single replacement on this page to find the reactivity series. Types of reaction: Synthesis -Decomposition -Single Replacement -Double Replacement -Combustion -Exothermic -Endothermic Decomposition reaction: brea.

Single Replacement Reactions. In a single replacement(or displacement) reaction one element replaces another element in a compound. They follow one of the following two patterns: A + BC --> BA + C (single anion replaces anion in compound) or. A + BC --> AC + B (single cation replaces cation in compound).

KEY to PRELAB Single Replacement Reactions And Relative Reactivity 1. 6M HCl is corrosive and toxic. It can cause chemical burns on your skin. Its vapors are also harmful, so working in a fume hood is required. If any acid is spilled, immediately start washing your hands with lots of water.

Inform your TA as soon as possible. Qualitative observations will be used. Tie-ins include single-replacement reactions (SRR), oxidation-reduction, practical applications such as galvanization, and predicting reactions.

Students work in teams to determine the relative reactivity. Purpose: To predict products and observe various single and double replacement reactions. Hypotheses: Single Replacement Reactions: Use the. activity series (p – Honors) and your understanding of single replacement reactions to predict products for the following reactions.

If no reaction will occur, then write “no rxn” on the product. reactions and double-replacement reactions. In a single-replacement reaction, atoms of one element replace atoms of another element in a compound.

In a double-replacement reaction, two compounds dissolved in water exchange positive ions. Describe the result of a double-replacement reaction. Because iodine is below chlorine on the periodic table, a single-replacement reaction will not occur.

Because fluorine is above bromine on the periodic table, a single-replacement reaction will occur, and the products of the reaction will be CaF 2 and Br 2. Test Yourself. Will a single-replacement reaction occur. If so, identify the products. Single Replacement Reactions Lab. Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to determine which metals are most reactive and to create an order from most reactive to least reactive.

Materials: Metals: 1. Using a well plate and the chemical given, determine which reactions will occur between the metals and the solutions. Single Replacement Reactions Lab Unit 3: Chemical ReactionsPurpose: The purpose of this activity is to determine which metals are most reactive and to create an order from most reactive to least reactive.

Carry out single replacement reactions. React metals with dilute acid to produce hydrogen gas. React metals with salts of other metals to cause a single replacement reaction. Use single replacement reactions to create voltage (make a battery).

List metals in order of activity based on your observation. In this experiment you will investigate several types of single displacement reactions and develop a relative order of reactivity of several metals and hydrogen. This relative order is called an activity series or electromotive series.

Background: The reactivity of an element is related to its tendency to lose or gain electrons. A generalized. Pre-lab: Experiment 9: Single Replacement Reactions Format & Clarity of the Report: See lab report checklist.

You are graded on how you format the lab and record your data, not just data collection. Before class starts: Read the lab for the week File Size: 97KB.The activity series of metals is an empirical tool used to predict products in displacement reactions and reactivity of metals with water and acids in replacement reactions and ore extraction.

It can be used to predict the products in similar reactions involving a different : Todd Helmenstine.A single replacement reaction will only take place when the element being displaced from the compound is less reactive than the element doing the displacing.

Anions and Cations Anions are atoms or molecules that have a net negative charge, which means that the atom or molecule has acquired one or more charged electrons from another atom or.
